From Assignment to Professional Platform (Midterm post)

I’ve known for a few years now that I have wanted to go into the film industry after I graduate. I have also known that one of the things that would make me stand out is if I had my own electronic website portfolio, yet I had never gotten around to creating one until my Digital Media and Culture class assigned developing my own website. This assignment was a bit terrifying to me at first because part of the reason I had not previously created my own website was because I was nervous to put my work out there on a professional platform. I had shared it with friends and family before, but by creating my own website and publishing my work there I elevated it from this is something I did for fun to this is something that could possibly effect my future employment opportunities.

Creating my own website has not only forced me to put myself out there professionally, but has also shown me how something as simple as having my own website does in fact put me at a slight advantage networking and professionally wise. This website is now something that I am able to add to my resume and also something I am quickly able to share I ever I happen to have an “elevator” encounter that otherwise would have been a missed opportunity.

One of the things about owning my own website that has made me rethink my digital media presence the most is having to post my weekly screening reflections to my site. I have always been one to love movies and love talking about movies, but now I am sharing my thoughts to the world through the filter of not only my academic work but also my professional platform and It has been fascinating to see how different these reflections are from the conversations I have with my friends about the exact same films

I am thankful that this class has forced me out of my comfort zone and finally forced me to make the website that I had been putting off for so long. I am excited to be able to develop and grow this platform even more and to see where it will eventually lead me.
