One of the most interesting things I think we read about last week was in the Lanier article. In this piece he talks about the MIDI system which is ecentialldy what all synthesized music is made from. I found this to be very interesting because I was previously unaware of how limiting this synthetic music system is to the genre of music. Instead of being able flow and combine with other notes, as is able to be down with a real instrument the MIDI system is just a projection of the notes themselves and cannot be manipulated to get the non exact notes that can be produced by real instruments. I think this is very interesting because it relates a lot to the way I view technology. I think that Technology has its advantages, such as allowing people to be connected even if they are separated from each other, but at the same time it has stark limitations that do not allow this communication to be as fruitful or personal as it would be if it were not limited by the system of the technology. Personally I think we would be better off without some of the technology and social media we have today, but it is so ingrained in our society that it is almost necessary. Just like I have learned to ajust accordingly and accept that in order to be a functioning individual in society I have to learn to use the limitations of social media to the best extent I can, musicians have learned to accept and use the MIDI system in a way that plays off of its limitations to create a style of music (Techno/ EDM) that otherwise may not have existed.
